
Chandigarh, before the break of Punjab into two states of Punjab and Haryana, was the capital of Punjab state. However, after the carving out of the Haryana state out the territory of Punjab, Chandigarh was made to serve as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is part of a ‘Tricity’ which also include Mohalli and Panchkula.
Effective from November 1, 1966; Central Government made Chandigarh a Union Territory in accordance with Section 4 of the Punjab Reorganization Act, 1966 with its administration functioning directly under the Central Government. Under the provisions of this Act, the laws in force in the erstwhile State of Punjab prior to November 1, 1966, continue to be applicable to the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
Administrative Setup of Chandigarh:
As far as administration goes, the Governor of Punjab serves as the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Under this administrative hierarchy, below the administrator comes, the Advisor to the Administrator. Under the administrator and his advisor, are the secretaries who hold variety of portfolios. The two important secretaries are the Home Secretary which holds portfolios like Housing, agriculture, Health, Tourism, Industries, Police etc., and the Finance Secretary which looks after the finance and planning of the city. Under them, are additional and joint secretaries. Multiple agencies work together to look after the administration of Chandigarh.
The 16th and the current MP of Chandigarh, is Mrs. Kirron Kher, from the Bhartiya Janta Party.

Chandigarh Police
The Chandigarh Police is presently headed by an Inspector General of Police who is ably assisted by a Deputy Inspector General of Police. The Senior Superintendent of Police looks after crime and law & Order aspects of policing whereas Traffic & Security is looked after by the Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic & Security).The training, operations and crime against women and children are looked after by Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations & Training).The Indian Reserve Battalion of Chandigarh Police is looked after by the Commandant, IRB. For the purposes of policing, the city is divided into Central (Sector, 17, 11, 3), East (Sector 26, 19, Industrial Area, Manimajra) and South (Sector 31, 34, 36, 39) divisions.

Chandigarh Traffic Police
The city is divided into four sub-divisions; Central, East, South West and South East Zones and traffic regulation in each subdivision is done by a traffic team led by a separate Traffic Inspector. The internal administration of the traffic police is looked after by the Inspector (Administration), who is also the Incharge of the Chandigarh Traffic Control Room, from where the toll free traffic Helpline (1073) is operated.

Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU)
The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking functions under supervision of the Home Secretary who is also the Secretary, Transport. The Director, Transport, carries out day-to-day management, assisted by three general managers in addition to works managers and other staff.Total strength Of bus fleet is 417 buses, 209 buses run on local/suburban routes, 208 buses run on Interstate routes covering Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, U.P., Uttaranchal, Rajasthan, Delhi & J & K CTU buses traveled approx.1.30 lakh kilometers per day and approx.1.5 lakh commuters commutes daily in CTU Buses. Each sector of the city has a bus stop. The Inter State Bus Terminals(ISBT) are located in Sector 17 and Sector 17. Apart from this, each sector of the city has a Bus Stop for inter city travels.
