Health care is the basic right of every citizen and it should be within the reach of everyone. Health is considered to be very important not only at the personal level of an individual but also from the point of view of the steady development of a nation as a whole because those having a sound physique and strong mental health provide a firm foundation for the development of a society and ultimately a nation. Public Health is one of the most important areas and a citizen is the most significant resource and asset of a country.
Keeping in view the above aspect of development, the Administration of Chandigarh is also committed for providing “Health For All”.
Chandigarh has a well maintained network of medical institutions such as PGIMER and government General Hospitals, health centers, government medical and dental colleges. The Health department is in pursuit of excellence in the field of providing health services to the people of Chandigarh. The Department of Health is under the control of The Director Health Services, who also serves as State Drug Controller under Drug and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and as State Food Health Authority under PFA.
There is one Post Graduate Institute of Medical education and Research (PGIMER) in Sector 12 and two general hospitals, one in Sector 16 and another in Sector 32. Besides these the city is dotted with several multispecialty private hospitals and clinics.
