Chandigarh : Fairs & Festivals

It’s a unique gathering of various poets from all over the country to recite verses in a jocular vein. Even those who do not ordinarily enjoy poetry look forward to the “Maha Moorkh Sammelan”, or Conclave of Colossal Fools. Chandigarh is the only city in India hosts such a gathering. The festival is organized on the 1st day of April every year.

Baisakhi

Baisakhi is a seasonal festival with a special accent. It is celebrated every where in the city on the first of Baisakh (the first month of Hindu calendar). This is the time when harvest is gathered in and the farmer exults in the fulfillment of his year's hard work. Mango festival

Venue: Pinjore Garden

One of the most important festivals of the city is the Mango festival. It is held in the month of June at Pinjore garden. Mango growers from all over the country come to this place to display their varieties. It is also an occasion for agro industries and food processing industries display their products viz. juice, squash, jams, pickles and “aam papad” etc.

Teej

Venue: Rock Garden (Sector-1)

Teej is a popular festival in north Indian states. The festival is celebrated in great enthusiasm in all places of the city. This swing festival welcomes the advent of the monsoon. Indo-Pak Mushaira

In the month of December the city brings together poets from India and Pakistan. Delegates from both the countries include writers, poets, painters, musicians, singers and other artists who interact with their counterparts in the course of a series of programmes spread over three days.

Plaza Carnival

Venue: Sector-17

Plaza Carnival is a weekly cultural event held on every Saturdays at the Central Piazza, Sector 17 and is an open air stage show for dancers, magicians, comedians, actors and acrobats. This three hour programme attracts large crowds and gives opportunities to the talented artists to do their stuff.

Chandigarh Carnival

Venue: Leisure Valley (Sector-10)
Month: In the second week of November

The Chandigarh Carnival is a popular event organized in the second or third week of November (just before Children's Day) every year. The carnival opens with a colourful procession followed by number of competitions. The carnival is a time for students and children to show their talent and elders too participate in a number of competitions.
